The Big Swim Planning Committee at Whale Beach SLSC has made the difficult decision to cancel the Macquarie Big Swim and the McGrath Little Big Swim, scheduled for Sunday, 25 January 2026.
This decision has not been taken lightly. Following expert advice from Surf Lifesaving Sydney Northern Beaches, Surf Lifesaving NSW, Northern Beaches Council, and close monitoring of current conditions, increased shark activity and water pollution levels mean we cannot safely proceed at this time. This is only the second occasion in 52 years that we have had to cancel the event.
We know how much the Big Swim means to so many of you, our swimmers, volunteers, families, and supporters and we understand how disappointing this news will be. However, the safety and well being of everyone involved is at the heart of our community and must always come first.
We are incredibly grateful for the understanding, patience, and ongoing support shown by our participants, volunteers, sponsors, and wider community. Your commitment is what makes the Big Swim so special, and we truly appreciate being part of such a supportive and passionate group.
